Day Nine: Phone Conversations with Longtime Friends
Event: Phone Convos with Jay, a friend since 6th grade, and Kevin, a friend since I’ve lived in NC
Buckle up. We’re going back to the early 90’s for this one. In sixth grade, back when he was known as J.D. (though his name is Jerome), Jay and I met. We were in the same class and rode the same bus, so we spent quite a bit of time together. One day, he brought a stuffed rabbit to class. I named it Bucky (from Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars) and asked Jay if I could have it. (Seriously. I did. How rude was I?!) A few days later, I felt guilty and returned the rabbit to Jay. Fast forward about ten years to college. Jay and I met up to play putt putt one evening and he gave me that stuffed rabbit. And today it sits in my office.

Despite the fact that he has lived in Florida for many years, Jay and I have remained good friends. I’ve always been able to count on him to cheer me up when I’m feeling down. And, more recently, he’s offered his design services to me for my business. As usual, it was very nice chatting with Jay tonight and refreshing his memory on all things Blennerhassett Elementary Class of 1992.
I also had a conversation with my good friend Kevin tonight. I met Kev through Jim when I moved to NC. They were roommates and eventually we all got a place together. Kevin is one of a kind and one of the most genuinely caring and thoughtful friends anyone could ever ask for. He’s in med school in NYC now, so we don’t speak as much as we used to, but with a friendship like ours, we can pick up where we last left off and not miss a beat. As always, he made me laugh several times while we talked and I could sense his passion for medicine. I’m so very proud of him and his determination to get where he is.
I’ve made some fantastic friends over the years and I get giddy when I think of how fortunate I am to have these folks in my life. Thanks for being there, guys!
