Day Seventeen: School Lunch
Event: School Lunch with Child Nutrition Friends
Surprise! Another celebration involving food!
I’ve always been a fan of school lunch. From my elementary school days to the five years I worked in the biz, you could find me filling my tray with USDA goodness. (I did take a three year hiatus in high school, but with open campus and The Pizza Place across the street, who could blame me?)
I’ve met some of the most caring, hard-working folks in school cafeterias. Lunch ladies are great people and I’ve been fortunate enough to remain friends with many of them. After scanning the year-round school menu for cheese dippers (cheese-stuffed breadsticks—one of my faves!), I headed to Susie’s school today for a yummy lunch. And, as an unexpected bonus, Tristan, another favorite lunch lady of mine, was there helping out. (Lunch lady is a gender-neutral term of endearment. Tristan knows that.)
Look how excited Susie was to be photographed with us!
Lunch, as expected, was delicious.

And, as always, Susie made me laugh all throughout my visit. She is one of a kind.
If you haven’t had school lunch in a while, might I suggest you send some appreciation to the hard-working women and men behind the scenes. They’re serious about taking care of the “babies” in their schools. And they serve some tasty meals!
